Supported Windows versions

• Inkscape 1.3 and newer: Windows 8.1 or later, which covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.
• Inkscape 1.2.2 back to 0.92.4: Windows 7 or later.
• Inkscape 0.92.3: the last release that still runs on Windows Vista and Windows XP.

These are the platform floors published with the releases themselves. If you are stuck on an old machine, the older release will open modern SVG files, but expect missing tools and no bug fixes.

32-bit or 64-bit

Both builds exist; 64-bit is the right answer on essentially every PC sold in the last decade and is required if you want Inkscape to use more than about 4 GB of memory. To check your system, press Win+Pause or open Settings → System → About and read "System type".

Disk and memory

The installed program needs roughly 1 GB of disk space including bundled extensions and Python. Memory is the resource that actually matters: 4 GB of RAM is workable for logos, icons and single-page artwork, 8 GB is comfortable, and 16 GB or more pays off when you trace large bitmaps, work with hundreds of objects, or keep several documents open at once.

What makes the canvas feel fast

Inkscape's rendering is mostly CPU-bound, so single-core speed matters more than core count, and a modern integrated GPU is fine. The things that genuinely slow a document down are heavy blur and filter effects, very large embedded bitmaps, and thousands of individual nodes. Practical fixes: link rather than embed big images while drawing, keep filters for the final pass, and split complex illustrations across layers you can hide.

Displays and input

High-DPI and multi-monitor setups are supported; if the interface looks too small or too large, adjust the UI scale in Edit → Preferences → Interface rather than changing your Windows scaling. Pen tablets and pen-enabled laptops work, with pressure sensitivity enabled per device under Input Devices.

Once the machine side is settled, continue with installation, or read troubleshooting if performance is worse than these notes suggest.
