Cost and licensing

Is Inkscape free? Yes, at no cost and under the GNU GPL, with no trial period or feature paywall. Can I use it for paid client work? Yes; the license covers the program, not your artwork. Longer explanation on is Inkscape free and open source.

Platform

Does it run on Windows 11? Yes, and on Windows 10. Releases from 1.3 onward need Windows 8.1 or later; see requirements. Is there an online version? No official one — details on Inkscape online. Is the download safe? Take it from the project's own release pages, linked from our download page, and avoid third-party installers.

Files and formats

What format does it save? SVG, an open standard. Can it open AI, EPS or PDF? Yes, with the usual caveats of any cross-application import — complex effects and text may need attention. Can it export for print? Yes: PDF, EPS and high-DPI PNG, covered in the export guide. Why does my text change on another computer? The font is missing there; convert text to paths first, as text and typography explains.

Machines and crafts

Does it work with Cricut? Yes — design in Inkscape, upload SVG to Design Space; see Inkscape for Cricut. With Glowforge? Yes, separating cut, score and engrave by color; see Inkscape for Glowforge. For sublimation? Yes, exporting 300 DPI PNG at final size; see Inkscape for sublimation.

Learning and comparison

Is it hard to learn? The first hour is the steepest; the beginner guide gets you to a finished drawing, and a dozen shortcuts do the rest. How does it compare with paid vector editors? It covers drawing, path editing, text and export competently and is SVG-native. Commercial suites lead on some print production features, CMYK handling and integration with their own ecosystems. For most illustration, icon, cut-file and craft work the difference does not decide the outcome.

Is Inkscape an Adobe product?

No. Inkscape is an independent open source project with no affiliation to Adobe. The confusion comes from search suggestions, not from anything the project claims.
